Building Committee/Aesthetics Committee

The care and maintenance of the UUCSV church building is under the supervision of the Building Committee and its sub-committee, the Aesthetics Committee. These committees welcome volunteers with an interest in the appearance and functioning of our physical surroundings, and who also may have special skills that apply. The volunteers may not be professionals, but it helps if they have a basic working knowledge of carpentry, electricity, roofing, painting, plumbing, interior design, art, or just handiness with a hammer or the color wheel. Committee chair is Jane J. Carroll.

Congregational Care Committee

The mission of this committee is

Within the context of a shared ministry we assume responsibility to represent the congregation in embracing members and friends of our larger family during times of crisis and special need.

Committee members rotate as a pool of volunteers who have signed up to supply food and/or transportation to our community in times of crisis or medical needs. Pastoral listening and support is offered by experienced lay volunteers. Call the church office, 669-8050, and leave a message. Call 911 if you have an emergency need. Committee chair is Dawn Wilson.

Finance Committee

This committee is responsible for reporting to the Board on the financial health of the church and the yearly canvass. Current members are Connie Krochmal, Jim Carillon, Lee Reading, Teresa Ballinger, and Dawn Wilson. Those with experience in accounting or who just like numbers are invited to contact Connie Krochmal regarding serving on the finance committee. It is a fun group and important work.

Membership Committee

Our mission is to enhance membership for all of us at Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Swannanoa Valley--charter members and newer members alike. Our committee is responsible for having greeters available to welcome everyone who attends Sunday morning services. We provide name tags for members and visitors and distribute orders of service on Sunday. We also encourage visitors to complete an interest card if they wish to receive more information about the church. We keep on hand for distribution informational pamphlets from the Unitarian Universalist Association.

We guide people who are interested in becoming members of UUCSV through the joining process. “Orientation to UU” classes are held periodically for those people who are interested in knowing more about UUism, our congregation, and possible membership.

We welcome members to join the Membership Committee at any time. Membership chair is Angie Underwood.

Personnel Committee

This committee is responsible for choosing paid staff, other than the Minister, to recommend to the Board for hiring. Currently these positions are the Office Administrator and RE Coordinator. The committee also makes recommendations about the hours of work, days off (including holidays), and the salaries of the employees. Members include Heidi Blozan and Evelyn Carter.

Religious Education Committee

The Religious Education (RE) Committee works in conjunction with the Director of Religious Education (DRE) to set policy and guidelines for the operation of the youth RE program. Scott Shaw is the committee chair. The committee’s goals are:

  • To ensure that Unitarian Universalist principles are incorporated into the RE program.
  • To plan and support the activities of the RE department.
  • To recruit and support teachers and childcare workers.
  • To maintain communication among members of the committee, teachers, parents, the DRE, the minister, and the congregation as a whole.
  • To provide input to the DRE, the minister, and the Sunday Service Associates regarding intergenerational (IG) events and worship experiences which include children and youth.

SOLS Women

This group is scheduled to meet on the third Sunday of each month at 12:30 pm, at UUCSV. We are the Sisters of Lucy Stone or SOLS, naming ourselves after an early pioneer of equal rights for women. In 1847 Lucy Stone gave her first lecture on women's rights, and the following year she was engaged by the Anti-Slavery Society as one of their regular lecturers. As a speaker she had great eloquence and was often able to sway an unruly and antagonistic audience. She married Henry Brown Blackwell in 1855 but continued, as a matter of principle, to use her own name and was known as Mrs. Stone. Women who kept their own last name after marriage became known as "stoners.” We welcome all women of the church to join our group. Just come to a meeting if you are interested in learning more about us or becoming part of our group.

Through cooperation with the UUA Partner Church Council we have supported our Unitarian partner church in Medeser, Romania. This activity will continue as part of our intention to support church-wide, local, national, and international causes and events. We provide funds for various projects within the church, like funding a new choir director and helping the Coming of Age program for youth.

Our monthly meetings are a place to strengthen friendships and undertake activities and events that speak to our need for pleasurable and edifying experiences. Jane J. Carroll is chair.
