We need van drivers as well as overnight volunteers and food for 3 meals (breakfast, bag lunches for 12, and everything for the evening meal). A sign-up sheet is available in the foyer.

Fall Work Party

Saturday, November 7; 9am - Noon

The leaves are already falling. So Grounds is organizing a leaf clean-up work party on Saturday, Nov. 7 from 9 am until noon or so. Bob Box will be bringing his truck with the vacuum hose. The leaves need to be raked in piles alongside the paved areas so Bob can vacuum them up for recycling. We can really use your help. Please bring your rake as there aren't enough in the shed to go around. If you can't attend on November 7, please feel free to rake on other days and times at your own convenience.

Room in the Inn

Friday, October 2

UUCSV participates in Room in the Inn several times a year here in Black Mountain. This program provides food, transportation, and lodging to 12 homeless women in the community. Give these folks a helping hand on Friday, October 2nd. They’ll be staying at the Black Mountain Presbyterian annex. Consider signing up to drive the van or serve as a backup overnight volunteer. We also need volunteers to provide meals (breakfast, bag lunches, and all dishes). A sign-up sheet is available in the foyer.

Love Defeats Hate

One year ago tomorrow, July 27, 2008. a man, who wrote that he hates liberals, walked into Knoxville’s Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church during the Sunday service and opened fire.

Two were killed, one from that church and one from the Westside UU church and six others were wounded.

Love Defeats Hate

Today, across the country, UUs are lighting chalices to commemorate this moment. Last year, we put up this banner outside for several months and then in our foyer for the past year to send a message of support for our sister churches in Knoxville and to remind ourselves that, truly, Only Love Defeats Hate. We also put that message in a photo (see home page) and sent this to the two Congregations in Knoxville. The UUA took out a powerful full page ad in many papers that announced, “Our Doors and Our Hearts Will Remain Open.”

Today as we take down this banner, we continue our commitment to those words, to the words on our banner, and to continuing our support the TVUUC and the Westside UU. church.

Love Defeats Hate

Today, as Rebecca Williams reads, we light this Peace Chalice, given to us when the Sahara Peace Choir sang here recently for peace in Israel-Palestine, using words given to us by the ministers of TN Valley and Westside, Rev. Chris Buice and Rev. Mitra Jafarzedeh.

On this anniversary Sunday, we invite you to light a chalice in remembranceof Greg McKendry from TVUUC and Dr. Linda Lee Kraeger from WUUC. We call them by name, for ours is a tradition that honors the life and journey of the individual. Even before the day of his death, Greg McKendry, a large bear of a man, lovingly used his stature to protect and comfort those at risk of violence. Linda Lee Kraeger, a woman of substantial intellect, sought to empower all those around her to live into their potential.

We may speak of chalice fire as lighting our way to the future. But let us also remember that when we are lost in darkness, it is the light of a flame that brings the loving presence of the other into our vision.

And so we light this chalice in memory of Greg McKendry's heart of gold and Linda Kraeger's mind on fire.

We add that Rev Buice has called for all of us to “Stand on the Side of Love With Knoxville” You can sign up and send a message to the two Knoxville Congregations at www.standingonthesideoflove.org. We hope everyone here will do so.
